Immunisation and cancer

Immunising our mob means having vaccine or vaccines to help prevent certain diseases and keep us healthy. Certain immunisations help prevent cancer.

For example, people who have the hepatitis B immunisation shot (vaccine) are helping prevent liver cancer and women, girls and boys who are immunised against human papillomavirus (HPV) are helping prevent cervical cancer and other types of cancer.

There are other vaccines available to our mob to help us stay strong and healthy. Immunisations work best when as many people in the community as possible have them. Firstly, make sure your immunisations are up-to-date and then check on your family and mob to see if they are immunised too.

Yarn with your doctor, nurse or Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health worker to check your immunisation status and if you are worried or have any questions about immunisations. Understanding why immunisations are recommended for everyone is important.

COVID-19 and cancer

People with cancer are more vulnerable to COVID-19 and are at an increased risk of more severe infection. Getting a COVID-19 vaccine is a safe and effective way of protecting yourself from getting really sick from COVID-19. The vaccine will help to protect you, your family and community against COVID-19.
